The Current Status of Silicon Carbide Production Capacity and Environmental Protection in China

China has more than 200 silicon carbide smelting enterprises with an annual production capacity of more than 2.2 million tons (including more than 1.2 million tons of green silicon carbide blocks and about 1 million tons of black silicon carbide blocks). The smelting transformer power is mostly 6300~12500kVA, and the largest smelting transformer is 32000kVA. More than 300 processing sand and micro-powder production enterprises, with an annual production capacity of more than 2 million tons. In 2012, the capacity utilization rate of silicon carbide was less than 45% in China. About one-third of the smelting enterprises have processed sand production lines. The enterprises manufacturing silicon carbide sand are mainly distributed in Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and other provinces.

The smelting production process of silicon carbide in technical equipment meant and single-ton energy consumers have reached the world’s highest level. The quality level of black and green silicon carbide original blocks is also world-class. The gap between China’s silicon carbide and the world’s advanced level is mainly concentrated in four aspects: First, large-scale mechanical equipment is rarely used in the production process, many processes rely on the workforce to complete, and per capita, silicon carbide production is low; second, on silicon carbide deep processing products The quality management of powdery sand and micro-powder products is not sufficient enough, and the stability of product quality is not enough. Third, the performance index of some cutting-edge products has a particular gap compared with similar products in developed countries; the fourth is the direct emission of carbon monoxide in the smelting process. Major foreign companies have basically achieved closed smelting, and almost all of China’s silicon carbide smelting is open smelting, and all carbon monoxide is directly discharged. In 2012, Chinese companies developed closed smelting technology to achieve full carbon monoxide recovery, but there is still a long way to go before the industry is widespread.
